Dr. John Mitakides  Obituary, Death – Dr. John Mitakides was a fantastic person who had a big impact on the Ehlers-Danlos community. It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing his passing because he was such a remarkable individual. Dr. Mitakides, DDS, DAACP, has devoted his professional life to gaining an understanding of those who suffer from Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum illnesses and working to improve their quality of life.

He diligently worked to promote the study and treatment of neck, craniofacial discomfort, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) difficulties, and he was a light of hope and knowledge for untold numbers of people. He passed away recently. Diplomate of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (DACP) and Diplomate of the American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine (ABCDSM) are the two highest levels of achievement that can be conferred by the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (AACP).

Dr. Mitakides was the only dentist in the country to be given this honor by the Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation, where he served as a member of the Professional Advisory Network. The work that Dr. Mitakides did in favor of The Ehlers-Danlos Society continued, and in 2021, he was given The Ehlers-Danlos Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his efforts. Dr. Mitakides was the pioneering force behind the establishment of the TMJ Treatment Center.

He was a frequent lecturer at national and worldwide conferences in TMJ and Craniofacial Pain diagnostic and treatment approaches, and he has done a great deal to expand the community’s awareness of this subject area. He was a significant contributor to the movement to bring about change and to raise awareness about EDS and HSD. Anyone who sought out to him received support, information, and a caring ear from him, in addition to his assistance in connecting people with the resources they required. Not only did the work of Dr. Mitakides have an impact on the lives of those currently coping with EDS and HSD, but it also motivated a new generation of medical experts to investigate illnesses that are frequently disregarded.
