Corey’s educational journey saw him graduate from Lexington Senior High School, where he contributed to the 1985/1986 championship football team. His pursuit of knowledge led him to North Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Furthering his studies, he achieved a Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
His professional path was distinguished, with roles at IBM Corporation, General Electric Company, Duke Power Company, and Wachovia Corporation. Corey’s commitment to justice and the legal field was evident in his six-year tenure as an Assistant District Attorney, making history as the first African American in this role for North Carolina Prosecutorial District 22. In December 2006, he founded The Law Offices of Corey D. Buggs, PLLC, leaving an indelible mark on the legal landscape.
Devotion to Faith and Community Service
Corey’s commitment extended beyond his career; he was a lifelong member of Files Chapel Baptist Church, where he served in various capacities, including trustee, financial secretary, treasury of the corporate board, and former youth director.
His dedication reached far beyond the church doors, encompassing numerous boards and associations such as Eta Kappa Nu, Electrical Engineering Honor Society, and the North Carolina Board Association. Corey’s impact was felt on the Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Council, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Boys and Girls of America Advisory Board, and many more.
Cherished Family and Lasting Legacy
As Corey concludes his earthly journey, he leaves behind his beloved wife, Sophie Wood Buggs, and their son, Will D. Buggs. His legacy extends to bonus children Nasheed “Zia” Peoples and NaQuia “Bella” Wood. Corey’s memory will forever be embraced by four sisters: Carmen Cotton, Helen Ferguson, Tanyel Chaney, and Jasmine (Steven) Henry, along with a brother, Jamall Steel.
His influence resonates with family, including two uncles, Alfonzo (Modestine) Richards and Calvin (Reverend Judy) Richards, great-uncle Bobby (Mary Ann) Richards, and three sisters-in-law: Marquita Wood, Vera Small, and Bridget (Kenneth) Well. Corey’s impact extends to a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service to honor Corey D. Buggs, Esq., will be held on Tuesday at Files Chapel Baptist Church at 3:00 pm, preceded by a family visitation at 2:00 pm.
